Generation Overview A Night Vision Device can be either a 1st, 2nd, 3rd or 4th generation unit, indicating the type of image intensifier tube used. 1st generation Currently the most popular type of night vision in the world, providing a bright and sharp image at a low cost. Amplifies existing light several thousand times, letting you clearly see in the dark. 2nd generation Primarily used by law enforcement or for professional applications. Micro-channel plate (MCP) works as an electron amplifier to amplify the light many more times then 1st generation, giving you a brighter and sharper image.- Photo Cathode type: Multi-Alkali
- Resolution from 32 to 45 lp/mm
- Signal-to-Noise Ratio from 10 to 16
- Photo Sensitivity: 250-450
- 5,000+ hour tube life
2nd generation CGT - Photo Cathode type: Multi-Alkali
- Resolution from 40 to 50 lp/mm
- Signal-to-Noise Ratio from 14 to 20
- Photo Sensitivity: 300-550
- 10,000-hour tube life
2nd generation HPT
- Photo Cathode type: Multi-Alkali
- Resolution from 51 to 64 lp/mm
- Signal-to-Noise Ratio from 16 to 24
- Photo Sensitivity: 500-800
- 10,000-hour tube life
3rd generation Brighter and sharper image over 2nd generation units, through addition of sensitive chemical to photocathode. Ion barrier film increases tube life. Provides good to excellent low light performance. - Photo Cathode type: Gallium Arsenide
- Resolution from 51 to 64 lp/mm
- Signal-to-Noise Ratio from 16 to 24
- Photo Sensitivity: 1200-2200
- 10,000-hour tube life
3rd generation Premium 3A - Photo Cathode type: Gallium Arsenide
- Resolution from 64 to 70 lp/mm
- Signal-to-Noise Ratio from 17 to 26
- Photo Sensitivity: 1400-2400
- 10,000-hour tube life
4th generation Top of the line performance in the night vision market, with significant improvement in contrast level and in performance under all light conditions. Substantial increases over previous generations in target detection range and resolution, particularly at extremely low light levels. Film-less technology and auto-gated power supply in image intensifiers result in up to 100% improvement in photo response; superb performance in extremely low light level (better S/N and EBI); and at least triple high light level resolution (a minimum of 36 lp/mm compared to 12 lp/mm). - Resolution from 64 to 72 lp/mm
- Signal-to-Noise Ratio from 24 to 28
- Autogated power Supply
- 10,000-hour tube life
